Chapter 28

“So these dreams started happening right after your accident at work?”

Liam nodded. “The very next night. But this thing tonight is something entirely new.”

Michael momentarily looked back at his friend with concerned eyes.

“It was just an accident, Mikey, an accident that I recovered from. I lived through it.”

“And you wouldn’t have if that neighbor hadn’t been there who just happened to know CPR.”

“I know. I’m incredibly grateful,” Liam said quietly.

“I need you to listen to me, Liam, and listen good,” said Michael, desperate to get his point across. “This all rolls downhill, right into Owens’ lap. If Owens wasn’t such an a-hole, you wouldn’t have been working three twelve-hour days on top of each other. If he was a halfway decent boss and a halfway decent landlord, he would have seen this and not sent you to do grunt work at one of his rentals. On top of that, you were working under unsafe conditions when you were installing that ceiling fan.”

“Mikey, you know me. I’ve worked those hours before, and lack of sleep never affects the quality of work I do. You said it yourself. C’mon, the tip of my drill hit a live wire that was buried inside the insulation. It was a freak accident.”

“Hey, Ed Owens is the last person you need to be sticking up for. The guy’s a jackass, and he could care less about any of his employees or tenants.”

Liam sighed and slumped back in his seat.

Michael continued. “All I’m saying is that this wasn’t just a little minor accident. I don’t know much about electricity, but I do know that you were out for a few minutes. Your heart stopped. Probably the only time that Ed Owens ever worried about any of his employees, and I’m sure he was more concerned about a lawsuit. But if your dreams started happening right after this accident, it probably had a lot to do with the accident. Do you remember anything about that day or what happened?”

“Not a lot. Except…” Liam turned his head away and looked out the passenger window into the darkness.

“Except?”

After a long pause, he spoke up. “There was this woman.”

“At the apartment?”

“I don’t know, man,” he sighed again. “I was lying there on the ground after I got electrocuted. All I remember is opening my eyes, and she was there, this beautiful woman. And then she wasn’t. It’s like she was an angel or something. It happened in a split second, and I drifted out of consciousness again. But I remember her face so well. It’s like it’s burned in my mind.”

“She probably was an angel,“ said Michael. “I mean, your heart stopped. That was like your little glimpse of Heaven,” Michael replied.

“Yeah, but there’s this one thing that keeps eating at me about the whole incident.” He stared straight ahead, biting at his lower lip. “She seemed… worried.”

“About you?”

“Yeah.”

“So it was probably just some chick in the apartment who saw it happen. It sounds to me like you need to find her; get her number.
